What we do

Formed in 1988, at the Gaia Trust, our mission is  Farming for people and wildlife. We believe that our farming practice should pass onto future generations:
  • land that is both productive and in good heart,
  • land that is managed to enhance wildlife and to mitigate environmental challenges, and
  • land that provides communities with an asset that can be enjoyed both informally and therapeutically.

Our vision is to be recognised for sustainable and socially responsible farming, for environmentally responsible stewardship, for its public engagement and as a well-run charity.

We will achieve our vision by
  • managing our properties in sympathy with nature
  • managing land for protection of native wildlife and in particular,  to support and protect rare and endangered species
  • engaging people with what we do
  • advocating and communicating the work of the Trust

Our values

Our decisions and actions will be:
  • Integrated – informed by environmental, economic and social factors
  • Empirical – evidence-based
  • Trustworthy, respectful and responsive – in our relationships between Trustees, staff, volunteers, partners and others with whom we engage
  • Transparent and accountable – in all that we do

Each of our properties has a plan that sets out site objectives for farming, for people and for the wildlife and the environment.

At most of our properties, the key mechanism for delivering many objectives is through the government's farm support system; Countryside Stewardship.
